CARPENTER
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Performs skilled work in the construction, erection, installation, and repair of structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, wallboard, and
other materials made from wood or wood products. Under the general supervision of supervisory level maintenance personnel, an employee in this class performs skilled work in applying the techniques of the trade in performing skilled work in the construction, erection, installation, and repair of structures and fixtures made of wood, plywood, wallboard, and other materials made from wood and wood products by using carpenter's hand tools and power tools and by conforming to local codes. An employee in this class possesses the necessary knowledges, skills and abilities to perform any or all skilled tasks of the trade, which distinguishes classifications that perform carpentry tasks of lesser difficulty, which require fewer skills. Incumbents receive
assignments orally from the supervisor who may supplement oral instructions with sketches, diagrams or blueprints. The supervisor reviews assignments by discussing same or through personal inspection. An employee in this class occasionally may exercise direct supervision over a small number of workers who perform unskilled tasks such as holding boards in place or carrying equipment. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
Studies blueprints, sketches, diagrams, or other kinds of building plans to determine the
dimensions of the structure to be fabricated and to decide the type of building material to use, such as lumber or fiberboard;
Prepares layout of the structure by using rules, framing edges or calipers;
Marks cutting and assembly lines on materials by using pencils, chalk or marking gauges;
Shapes or cuts materials to prescribed measurements by using planes, chisels, miter boxes, and
hand and power saws;
Assembles shaped or cut materials into prescribed measurements and fastens materials together
by using hammers, nails, pins, or glue;
Verifies trueness of structure by using level, plumb bob, or square;
Erects framework for structures and lays sub flooring according to the aforementioned methods;
Builds stairs and installs partitions and cabinet work according to the aforementioned methods;
Applies a variety of paneling, such as decorative, sound deadening, or shock absorbing, to
ceilings and walls according to the aforementioned methods;
Fits and installs prefabricated window frames, doors, door frames, weather stripping, interior and
exterior trim, and finish hardware, such as locks, letter drops and kick plates, according to the aforementioned methods;
Constructs forms for the pouring of concrete according to the aforementioned carpentry methods;
Estimates through considered or casual judgment and through measuring and counting both
materials needed and time needed to perform work.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in carpentry work; thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the
carpenter's trade; skill in making carpentry installations and repairs; skill in the use of tools and materials used in the carpentry trade; skill in identifying grades and quality of lumber; ability to read and understand sketches, drawings, and blueprints; ability to follow oral instructions
pertaining to carpentry assignments; ability to estimate through considered or casual judgment and through measuring and counting both materials needed and duration of assignments.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Two (2) years of full time experience under a journey level Carpenter which provided training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. Apprenticeship training in the carpentry trade, or training gained by the completion of technical courses in the carpentry trade at a school, institute or branch of the Armed Services may be substituted for the above training experience on a year-for-year basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT: Certain assignments made to employees in this class will require access to transportation to meet field work assignments made in the
ordinary course of business in a timely and efficient manner.
