DATA ENTRY OPERATOR
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This class involves the responsibility for entering data from source documents to either punch cards, magnetic tapes, discs or directly into a computer via a video display terminal. The work requires accurate entry of data and activities provide support to professional and technical staff. The work is performed under general supervision with latitude for independent judgment as the incumbent gains experience on the job.
Supervision of others is not a normal responsibility of the position; does related activities as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Enters data from many varied sources and documents on to magnetic tape, data cards, discs, or
directly into the computer;
Makes selection from memo to update proper file and makes changes, additions and/or
corrections;
May enter data into diskettes to be processed to compute review layouts and follows appropriate
procedures;
Completes daily logs and reviews procedures;
May make new or revised records layouts;
Reviews source material for missing or inconsistent information;
Performs related clerical tasks as required.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of principles and practices of data entry machine operation; good knowledge of office terminology procedures and equipment; skill in operation of a data entry machine, with speed and accuracy; ability to follow oral and written directions; clerical aptitude; ability to select appropriate file for updating; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Either: 1. Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and six months experience in the operation of data entry machines; or
2. Successful completion of a training course in data entry machine operation and six months experience in the operation of data entry machines.
NOTE: Documented part-time or volunteer experience will be accepted on a prorated basis.
