ELECTRONIC WORK STATION OPERATOR
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: In accordance with programmed instructions, the work involves responsibility for operating an EWS (electronic work station) with processing unit, video display, floppy and/or hard disk drive, tractor and/or page feed printer. The primary
input device, being an alphanumeric multi-function keyboard, is utilized to record and revise correspondence, reports, statistical and accounting data, and other textual materials. This position does not involve responsibilities in the areas of programming or systems analysis. However, an incumbent may modify or merge existing software packages in accomplishing work station functions. Additionally, when not engaged in equipment operation, an incumbent performs related clerical duties. The work is performed under general supervision with leeway allowed for
exercise of independent judgment in carrying out details of the work. Supervision over the work of others is not ordinarily a responsibility of employees in this class. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
Operates an electronic work station and related peripheral equipment in compiling and
processing data and/or text for a variety of records and/or documents;
Studies program operating instruction books to ascertain the proper operational procedure and
the requirements of each project to be processed and/or information stored;
Stores completed documents on magnetic media and updates table of contents or index entries as
appropriate to identify documents;
Maintains disk directories, run control books and performs timely and adequate backups of
information stored within the system;
Performs routine minor operator preventative maintenance on equipment as specified by
manufacturer to insure efficient and effective operation including analyzing machine malfunction and the taking of appropriate action;
May transcribe from dictating equipment in rough/final copy a wide variety of technical,
financial and- statistical information, memoranda, correspondence, manuals, directories, contracts or other materials;
May operate equipment in word processing mode to record and revise correspondence, reports,
statistical tables, forms and other textual materials.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of the use and operation of electronic work station and related peripheral equipment; working knowledge of office terminology and procedures; working knowledge of proper grammatical usage and punctuation; working knowledge of business vocabulary; ability to manually manipulate an alphanumeric multifunction keyboard; ability to spell and identify misspelled words; ability to determine and set up appropriate document format, charts and tabular listings; ability to coordinate information from typed or
handwritten copy to word processing mode and verify document on a cathode ray tube visual

screen; ability to type at 45 words per minute; ability to operate an electronic work station; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to plan and schedule work
station activities; accuracy; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:
1. Completion of one year of study at a regionally accredited or New York State registered
college with at least six semester credit hours in computer science, electronic data processing or a related field; or
2. Graduation from high school or possession of a New York State equivalency diploma
including or supplemented by successful completion of a course or training program in the operation of an electronic work station; or
3. Six months of full-time experience in the operation of an electronic work station; or
4.An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (1), (2) and
(3).

NOTE: Documented part-time or volunteer experience will be accepted on a prorated basis .
