LANDSCAPE MAINTAINER

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is skilled landscaping work involving the responsibility for-the propagation, cultivation and care of flowers, shrubs, trees and grass. Employees in this class will exercise supervision over work crews. Work is performed under the

general supervision of a higher level staff person with wide leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

Designs landscapes;

Prepares and treats soil;

Determines suitable methods to be used in the prevention, treatment and eradication of plant

diseases, wild and undesirable plant and grass species;

Transplants, cultivates and cuts plants;

Seeds, mows, weeds, rolls, fertilizes and waters lawns and other grass areas;

Operates, maintains and repairs a variety of park maintenance equipment;

Maintenance of trees, shrubs, and flowers including tree removal, pruning, trimming, spraying,

fertilizing and planting;

Determines and regulates methods and frequency of grass cutting according to areas used and

functions;

May periodically perform routine building maintenance activities;

Assists with development of specifications for equipment, contracts, park development and

capital improvements;

Assigns work and supervises work crews.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: practices including methods of seeding, propagating, cultivating,

transplanting, and cutting; good knowledge of farm and park equipment; good knowledge of plant diseases and methods used to combat them; ability to supervise and plan the work of others; ability to prepare written reports; ability to make sketches in landscaping work; ability to follow written and oral instructions; ability to make mechanical repairs on farm equipment; reliability; physical strength and endurance sufficient to operate heavy farm, park and gardening machines and tools.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Graduation from a two-year college recognized by the University of the State of New York with an Associate Degree in Landscape Development, Landscape Architecture or related subject area and four years of landscaping, gardening or park maintenance experience; or

2. Graduation from high school and six years of experience as indicated in (1) above; or

3. An equivalent combination of training and experience as indicated in (1) and (2) above.

NOTE: Documented part-time or volunteer experience will be accepted on a prorated basis.
