PLUMBER

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The incumbent works as a journeyman plumber performing skilled work in the plumbing and stearnfitting tasks and is further responsible for the performance of work requiring the knowledge of other skilled trades. The Plumber works directly under the general supervision of the Senior Building Maintenance Assistant and the Building Maintenance Mechanic. The Plumber may exercise supervision over employees as assigned. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

Lays out working details of and does skilled work involved in altering, maintaining and repairing

water and sewer systems, sinks, toilet equipment, and their accessories and fittings;

Repairs and maintains hot water heating equipment, such as boilers, pumps, air handling

equipment;

Installs gas, air, vacuum, oxygen, water and sewer lines;

Does steamfitting and pipe fitting work with steel, iron, brass, lead and other materials;

Inspects and tests pipe lines and plumbing;

Cares for tools, supplies and equipment;

Performs a variety of tasks requiring a working knowledge of other trades;

Start, stop, adjust, troubleshoot and regulate equipment operated;

Observe meters and gauges and manipulate valves and other controls to regulate flow of water

and fuel and record gauge readings;

Check equipment while in operation to determine malfunctioning units, report on problems and

make minor repairs as required .

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the standard practices, processes, materials and accident precautions of the plumbing, steamfitting and pipe fitting trades; good knowledge of mechanical drawing; some knowledge of town plumbing laws and regulations; ability to work from plans, sketches, specifications, blueprints, and oral and written instructions; dependability; thoroughness; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: One year of experience as a journeyman plumber.

NOTE: Documented part-time or volunteer experience will be accepted on a prorated basis.
